5 Steps You Need Now to Protect Your Focus and Creativity
With the U.S. elections just days away, many of us, myself included, are feeling a heightened sense of anxiety and distraction. In the maelstrom of our current “now,” it is easy to lose sight of your creativity and pay more attention to the noise from the media than your own work. The political landscape, combined with a constant stream of updates on global events, can easily pull you away from your creative projects and affect your emotional wellbeing. While you cannot control external events, you have control over how you engage your mind and protect your mental health.
Here are five strategies to help you maintain creative focus and build emotional resilience during these uncertain times.
1- Limit Media Consumption
The barrage of news and social media updates can flood your mind and drain your energy. While staying informed is important, constantly consuming negative media clouds your focus. None of us need that kind of mental clutter.
Set specific times each day to check the news or social media. Be selective about the sources you trust. This creates the mental space for creativity to flow and allows you to stay mission-focused on your projects. When you need a break, skip the news or social media scrolling and engage in something uplifting: read a book, watch a film, or take a walk in nature. My guilty pleasure when I need an escape? Watching rom-coms.
2- Set Daily Intentions to Stay Grounded and Productive
Use the morning to set intentions that guide your day, both creatively and emotionally. This practice helps anchor your attention and resist distractions.
Try:
“I will protect my creative space and stay focused on writing the next award-winning script.” (Staying calm and focused.)
“I will keep my inner peace and curiosity no matter what unfolds.” (Remaining centered.)
“I will show compassion to myself and others, even when I feel like spitting bullets.” (Maintaining composure.)
Think of these intentions as mental armor. When stress or distractions arise, use them to center yourself and remain productive
3- Protect Your Energy During Conversations
Conversations about politics and current events are inevitable, yet the contentious ones will easily deplete you. Protect your emotional wellbeing by choosing when and how to engage in these exchanges. You do not have to be part of every debate.
Instead, focus on discussions that inspire creativity and growth. Allow yourself to step back from heated verbal ping-pong matches. This will go a long way toward preserving your inner calm.
4- Prioritize Stress-Reduction Practices
Stress-reduction practices will serve you well in maintaining emotional balance and fueling creativity. Here are my “go-to’s”:
- Meditate: Just a few minutes each day can help clear mental clutter and restore focus. I meditate for 30 to 40 minutes most mornings when I wake up. This has been a game-changer for my wellbeing.
- Breathe: Deep breathing exercises, like the ‘4-7-8’ technique (inhale for four counts, hold for seven, and exhale for eight) can help you stay peaceful and centered during high-stress moments. I use this technique as part of my meditation practice.
- Exercise: Moving your body—walking, yoga, or a workout—releases stress hormones and can spark new ideas. I try to walk at least three miles a day. Many of my best creative ideas have come during these walks. For me, walking is part of my creative time.
- Gratitude: Keep a gratitude practice. Every day, either write down or say out loud (if journaling is not your thing) three things you are grateful for. This practice creates a mindset that actively “looks for the good,” helping to shape and strengthen positive neural pathways, steering you away from negativity. It opens the door for both hope and creativity.
5- Stay Motivated and Inspired
Creativity, motivation, and inspiration thrive through connection. Stage 32 is a fantastic way to find this. Whether through a wall post, writing group, trusted collaborator, or feedback, connecting with others helps sustain your motivation and keeps you inspired.
Do not underestimate the power of community. Engaging with others will sharpen your focus and remind you that you are not on this creative journey alone.
Keep Telling Your Story
The world needs your stories now more than ever. You can stay focused and continue producing meaningful work by nurturing your emotional wellbeing, setting clear boundaries, and safeguarding your creative process. Creativity demands persistence and belief in your story’s value. So, protect your peace, stay grounded, and keep creating. Your voice matters, and your creativity has the potential to inspire change.
