Coffee & Content: Lighting Without Lights and Telling a Story with Lighting

Happy Sunday Creative Army!

First of all, congratulations to all of you who have already participated in our monthly Introduce Yourself Weekend! Thousands of connections have been made between entertainment creatives and professionals from every corner of the globe. Whether you are a long-time member or brand new to Stage 32, take a moment to pop over to the Introduce Yourself Lounge and say hello before the end of the weekend.

This week's Sunday dose of inspiration is all about Lighting. Whether you're making a TikTok or a feature-length film, lighting is a key ingredient in storytelling, and I think these resources can help light up some bright ideas for you all on how to use lighting in your work.

First up, we've got Standard Story Company providing tips on how to get cinematic lighting on a budget. The gear here is not necessarily stuff that the average consumer would have on hand, but it is fairly affordable and can be purchased easily online so that you can put these techniques into practice today.

If you want to keep your budget even lower while making an impact, then you'll love this second video: 4 Ways to Light Cinematically Without Any Light. You don't need a ton of light to make your project look great. Less is definitely more in this arena, and these tips from In Depth Cine will show you how.

And for those looking for the maximum effect with lighting and want to learn from a top-notch industry gaffer, you must check out this video from Indy Mogul featuring an interview with Master Gaffer Harold Skinner, who's worked with Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, and countless other directors. In this video, Harold uses scenes from films he's worked on (including The Social Network and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) to show how he uses lighting to tell a story.

Lastly, if you're looking for a little daily dose of inspiration and ideas on different lighting setups, then Tyler Kaschke's Instagram account, Colorado Gaffer, is an incredible resource that you can use for projects of all sizes.

As always here at Stage 32, we love to share stories and knowledge with our fellow film fans. Know someone who would love this content? Share it with them! Tag them below!
