Coffee & Content: Storytelling Through Costume Design

Happy Sunday, Creative Army!
I've got my coffee in hand and your weekly dose of content coming in hot - grab your coffee of choice, and let's dive right in.
When you're creating your film or television series, costume design is crucial to your story. It helps the audience understand the character, adds to the world, contributes to the tone, and can even elevate the plot. It doesn't just exist in period films but even in some of the biggest contemporary-set releases, such as DO REVENGE, NOPE, and FALLING FOR CHRISTMAS.
When talking about costume design, we have to talk about one of the greatest of all time, Ruth E. Carter. Carter has been nominated for multiple Oscars and finally won a few years ago with BLACK PANTHER. That's why I wanted to highlight her interview with Vanity Fair looking at her thought process as she created the award-winning looks for the MCU film.
Next up, we'll take at some of the most iconic costumes of cinema with Daniel Netzel's video. This piece continues what Carter discusses regarding the psychology of characters and their costumes and how it works within the world to create an iconic visual that stands the test of time.
Lastly, if you love this topic, you must check out the podcast The Art of the Costume. Each episode digs into a different film or television series from all different time periods. They talk about the stories behind making the costumes, as well as what costumes say about the character and add to the visual presentation of the project. I'm recommending this two-part episode, where hosts Elizabeth Joy Glass and Spencer Williams interview Costume Designer Alex Bovaird. The first episode highlights Bovaird's work on the HBO hit series THE WHITE LOTUS, and the second episode pivots to Bovaird's next project, the blockbuster NOPE.
