Coffee & Content: The Machinery of the Business
Happy Sunday, Creative Army!
First, congratulations to all of you who have already participated in our monthly Introduce Yourself Weekend! Thousands of connections have been made between entertainment creatives and professionals from around the globe. Whether you are a long-time member or brand new to Stage 32, take a moment to pop over to the Introduce Yourself Lounge and say hello before the end of the weekend.
First up, in this video from It Was A Sh*t Show, they’re sharing an in-depth video essay about the making of The Game of Thrones pilot. As they point out, in the entertainment world, there are millions of dollars on the line, and troubled productions are bound to happen. Add to that the fact that making high fantasy television is always a difficult endeavor. Game of Thrones was being led by a showrunning duo who had never made a television series before and they had the arduous task of selling the world on a vastly layered fantasy drama with dozens of characters, endless set pieces, and complicated politics. Looking back now, it’s easy to overlook the never-ending obstacles ahead of them in creating what is widely regarded as one of the best event television phenomena of all time. But it’s important to remember and acknowledge that it’s never easy.
One of the most common questions that I get asked is, “How can I get a leg up on the competition?” I always say that you have to have a Producer’s mind and understand the machinery of the business. That means educating yourself on how a producer thinks, how they manage their day, and how they make their decisions. Learning and understanding that perspective can be invaluable whether you’re a writer, filmmaker, actor, etc. Understanding as much of the process as possible will give you a leg up! Learn more in this video!
