Coffee & Content: What Ryan Coogler’s SINNERS Teaches Us About Creative Control

Happy Sunday, Creative Army!

Have you had a creative weekend so far? Whether you’ve been writing, filming, editing, or simply dreaming up your next big idea, I’ve got some inspiring content to fuel your passion and keep you moving forward. So grab your coffee, and let’s dive in.

This week’s featured video comes from FilmSpeak: Ryan Coogler’s SINNERS Just Changed Filmmaking Forever.

Coogler’s Sinners is already being called a landmark achievement in cinema and a genre-defining horror masterpiece. Through vivid, soul-stirring imagery and an emotionally charged narrative, Sinners explores faith, culture, community, exploitation, and what it truly means to be free. The result? A cinematic experience that feels personal, provocative, and revolutionary.

But there’s even more to unpack, because beyond the screen, Coogler is challenging the system. During my most recent Ask Me Anything event, someone asked about Sinners and its potential impact on the studio system. The deal Coogler made ensures that the rights will eventually revert back to him. That’s a bold, strategic move and one a lot of studios weren’t willing to play ball with. But it signals a shift.

Tarantino has made similar moves before, but this time it’s resonating differently and publicly. It’s a reminder that the business is always evolving. Just when people say film is dead, a new wave hits. We’ve seen it before with the indie boom of the '90s, and we’re seeing it again with projects like Sinners.

A million things can come from artists protecting their work and negotiating smart. That’s why it’s crucial to stay informed, educated, and focused on the possibilities instead of getting caught up in industry pessimism. You can watch the clip from my AMA where I dive deeper into this topic right HERE.

Let’s keep the conversation going in the comments:

If you had the chance to retain rights to your project after a set period of time, would you take it, even if it meant fewer initial opportunities? Why or why not?

As always, we love sharing inspiration, tools, and insights that help fuel your creative fire. Know someone who would love this content? Share it with them.
